As for the separate repos, I think there is indeed some interest by
some people (including me), but to take a decision we need a proof of
concept for one repo, with a grouped one made probably with git
subtree that people can use if they want to reproduce the grouped
situation we have now. It is possible that the grouped repo with git
subtrees (or submodules) should address the concerns raised by Matjaž
and Pedro.

So let's make this proof of concept, then we'll see all together how
it looks compared to other options.

For the non-split up option, I tried to "git rm -r" all directories,
one by one. Than to simulate the porting of a module, I did "git
revert" of the commit that does "git rm -r".

Then I tried to make a commit on 8.0 and forward port it. It works
fine, and history is displayed correctly.

If we don't do the Big Split, I'd prefer to try the forward port
merges, so no rebases (including filter-branch which is a rebase).
