Haha Fabiaens reasoning about that is funny. At the very end of the day
it boils down to the fact that Odoo ORM is just too imperformant to 
allow massive joins on accounting every one and a while and doesn't
make good use of the query analyzer and performance tweaks to the
database either. 

I remember well when i spoke with him about exactly this.... and back
than he was saying "... nobody needs in-memory databases".

I was long involved in an SAP migration project from one of the largest
computer vendors in the world. And they had exactly that issue in the
SAP FICO module when the period end calculations were done. We measured
in total 14000 SAP systems and found out that the issue was the same
everywhere. No guess why SAP is selling SAP HANA as an accelerator for
classical SAP ECC as well... Because it allows to calculate these
figures at fingertips as they say (its not exactly this but seconds
rather then minutes and hours in most cases)
