I don't have an answer but I can confirm your subject is valid.

One issue is that one can also pay against a confirmed Sales Order (rather than an invoice).
Similar to this would be what happens when an order is placed in Magento, which by the way can be payed in Magento via PayPal.

Agree though, when payed directly the IPN interface needs to work properly.  It fails at present in version 8, at least in my install.
The worst part of the failure is that the customer may not know if it went through or not.

Seems this cam up in another thread today as well.

When I send an invoice from odoo 8, the customer will get a PayPal 
button. After the payment is made, the invoice is not marked as paid 
automatically.

Is there a module that can achieve this automatically?

For the e-commerce part in odoo, there is a module that would mark the 
invoice as paid using PayPal with all the details of the payment. I 
think it is using IPN of PayPal.

If such a module is available, where can I download it from? Or who can 
I purchase it from?
