What I do is put the images in my s3 server and it works fine, is has some benefits:

1.- Less size in the code.
2.- You can  use images from several sources.
3.- You can change the images to update them with better edition afterwards with no change in the source code or git dependency.

It works so far so good on ourr modules BTW.

Well, I see it as a perfect solution for custom modules developped by a company like vauxoo. Simple to update, etc...

But for OCA modules, it requires to have an OCA server for that, that all contributors should have access to the server to add / change / update files with same access right than for github.
And if yes, we'll loose git history for images. Not sure it's a good point.

I really see fixing odoo Core (and other tools) more simple. Don't you think ?
