PS: Oh but during my journey I figured that the period lock date in version 12 is such a strong (including compliance) promise, that it would be chaotic to extend it.

To not forgo the "extend" use case, it seems advantageous to postpone the period lock date and early lock journals, possibly multiple times during a period lock.

Period is period,it requires indeed certain discipline, or pobably one not ought to call it period, otherwise.

I hope I exposed it intelligibly...

What you mention is probably the only thing that makes truely sense, so I already ported it and reimplemented the way you describe ...

It's quite different in implementation, it automatically locks journals on a time based policy, but basically does the same thing. e.g. You can say the Sales Journal is closed 8 days after end of month, or 20 days from transaction date. There is a counterpart module for partners as well in that repo.
